Our system of holds is rather like a line or a queue. There may be a line of people behind you for the hold on that new movie or that new book. Our system keeps track of the queue for us. Whenever a book on hold becomes available for one of our patrons, it goes on the hold shelf. Most of the time patrons pick up their holds in a timely manner but sometimes there is a delay. We are trying to lessen the "queue that is not moving" scenario a bit by making a simple change. Our system has always kept holds on the shelf for 10 days and then we are supposed to send the item to its next destination - the next person on hold, the owning library, or maybe even back on the shelf so someone else can check it out. We are going to try to enforce that policy more now than we used to do. When the hold becomes available, you will either receive an email or a phone call or possibly both. After 7 days, you will receive a 'reminder' phone call. After 10 days, the item will go on to its next destination.
It is really important to keep the library informed of any changes to your phone number or email. We hope the reminder phone call will be helpful. The process may be a bit bumpy at first, but hopefully in the long run everyone will benefit.
