Local author, Tim Pletkovich was at the library yesterday (Tuesday, September 18th) to talk about his book, Nuns, Nazis, and Notre Dame: Stories of the Great Depression, WWII, and the Fighting Irish. The book tells the story of Gerald A. O'Reilly who grew up in Brooklyn, New York and fought with the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division during World War II on skis in the mountains of Northern Italy. He went on to have a very full life with his family, many friends and his career. Tim had the audience play a fast paced and very fun Jeopardy game as part of the presentation. We had 2 teams with three people each. The competition was back and forth between the two teams. On the final Jeopardy question, the Darla team (Darla, Donita, and Sara) had 300 points. The Sally team (Sally, David, and Diane) had 180 points. The Sally team made their final Jeopardy wager of 180 points and got the question right. The Darla team made their final Jeopardy wager of 61 points and got the question wrong. So, the Sally team was victorious! (Sally missed being in the picture). It was fun to watch the competition!

One of the high school classes regularly visits the library on Tuesdays. Some of them were dressed up for 'Twin Day' as the Things from the Dr. Seuss story, The Cat and the Hat. We enjoy their visits as they are a very polite group of kids (and teachers).
It is kind of hard to word this correctly. What we mean is a club where adults can come and play games like cards or Scrabble or other wholesome games. Hah! I am envisioning this club as a for fun kind of club, not really a competitive, serious kind of club.
Anyhow, if this sounds like fun to you maybe we could have a meeting where we can all decide how to organize it and what day/time to meet. Once again you can email us, call us at 527-4360 or sign up at the library front desk. If there is enough people interested, I will organize an informational meeting. We had a few sessions of Family Game Club last spring. The meetings were held on 4 pm on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. The first meeting had quite a few people. The second meeting had much fewer. If there is still interest, we will take this back up. Family Game Club was envisioned as an informal time where families can come and play games with other families. If you are interested, let us know by emailing us or calling us at 527-4360 or by stopping by the front desk of the library to sign up. And if you have suggestions, please let us know!
It doesn't feel like fall outside but the calendar reminds me that it is time to start thinking about some of our clubs. Last year we had a cookbook club, family game club, knitting and crochet, and also adult coloring.
We had a good time with cookbook club last year but we didn't have too many people attending. Did we pick a bad night? Cookbook Club is basically a club for people who like to cook and have adventurous taste buds. We pick a cookbook or maybe a country and we make recipes that fit the theme. We basically make food and get together to eat it and talk. We had fun talking last year but it would be nice to have a few more people so we don't make a recipe and then have to take most of it home with us. We will try this again and hope to get a few more that are willing to try it. So, if you are interested send us an email, call us at 527-4360, or stop by the front desk of the library to sign up. Put down what evenings and times would work for you. Or if you have other suggestions, please let us know. Maureen Brunsdale was at the library last Thursday, September 13th to talk about her book, The Bloomington-Normal Circus Legacy. Darla Crump won a copy of Maureen's book in the raffle drawing. Maureen is pictured with two very enthusiastic El Paso residents who really enjoyed her presentation. I had to leave early but I have heard great comments from those who did attend. Thank you, Maureen for taking the time to come to El Paso and show us the circus collection at the ISU Library and talking about your book. Don't miss our next presentation on Tuesday, September 18th when local author, Tim Pletkovich will play Jeopardy with the audience as he discusses his latest book, Nuns, Nazis, and Notre Dame. ![]() Come learn about Bloomington-Normal's Circus Legacy. Maureen Brunsdale will be at the library this Thursday, September 13th at 6 pm to talk about her new book! She'll cover the history of aerialists in Bloomington-Normal from the beginning (around 1870 with the nephew of Jesse Fell, I.P. Fell) to the mid-1950s when Bloomington’s own Arthur M. Concello (then a general manager of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, but formerly a triple somersaulting trapeze flyer) made the decision to centralize circus operations in Florida.
Register at the front desk or call the library at 527-4360. You can still come if you do not register. We ask for registration to help us plan and to help us not worry so much about whether we have an audience for our speaker! Tim Pletkovich will be back at the library next Tuesday, September 18th at 6:30 pm to talk about his latest book, Nuns, Nazis, and Notre Dame: Stories of the Great Depression, World War II,and the Fighting Irish. Tim will interact with the audience in a playful Jeopardy style game during this presentation. Register for the fun event by calling the library at 527-4360 or by stopping by the front desk. In this book, Pletkovich examines the life of U.S. Army veteran Gerald A. O'Reilly. The son of a prominent Wall Street banker and grandson of a U.S. Ambassador under President Teddy Roosevelt, O'Reilly was raised in Brooklyn, New York, during the 1920's and 1930's, when stick ball ruled the streets and rumblings of another war in Europe shook the earth across the Atlantic. His story takes us from the bleachers at Ebbets Field in trolley-car Brooklyn to the hallways of Notre Dame during legendary football coach Frank Leahy's national championship years, to the innermost thoughts of an elite Tenth Mountain Divison soldier thrust into the horrors of battle in Italy's harsh Apennine Mountains. Pletkovich interviewed Mr. O'Reilly over a four-year period during which the two amassed more than fifteen hundred hours of dialogue. You can still come even if you do not register. Registration helps us with planning and it eases our worrying about having an audience for our presenter.
![]() Local author, Tim Pletkovich was at the library last night to discuss his book, Civil War Fathers, Sons of the Civil War in World War II. Tim discussed how the book came to be written. Tim was a teacher in Peoria. He assigned his students to interview World War II veterans whose fathers served in the Civil War. A group of his students enjoyed it so much that they would stay after school to keep the correspondence going. News of the project spread around the country and that led to Tim compiling the interviews into the book. Mr. Pletkovich is a natural speaker, full of stories and very knowledgeable about his subject. Thank you Mr.Pletkovich! The September book for RIOT ACT (Readers In Our Town Are Coming Together) is The Book of Joy by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The next meeting is Thursday, September 27th at 7 pm at the library.
