![]() The Joyful Genealogist, Kim Mullins visited the library last night to talk about 'Census Clues Can Confuse'. She stressed that census records can give you clues in genealogy but you need to realize that you shouldn't take every detail for the gospel truth. If you tie your census information in with your other genealogical information, you can start to get a clearer picture of your ancestry. She went over the U.S. Census records starting from 1790 going to 1940. Many states also kept census records. She went over many details and potentially confusing information that you may encounter. We had a small crowd but we hope they enjoyed this free and informative presentation. We hope to have her back in the fall so that we can learn about other sources of genealogical information.

The first U.S. census was done in 1790 and since that time one has been done every 10 years! This class will discuss not only U.S Federal Census Records but State Census Records as well. You will learn who was counted and why, what questions were asked, which schedules are available for each census, researching special populations and how to put all of this together to learn more about your family! ![]() Tim decided to postpone his presentation until after summer is over as people seem to be very busy with vacations and other summer activities. We hope that you can attend Mr. Fraker's presentation Thursday night on his latest book, "Looking for Lincoln in Illinois: a Guide to Lincoln's Eight Judicial Circuit.". Thank you to the Woodford County Historical Society for helping to bring Mr. Fraker to the library.
This quote from Mr. Fraker's website (http://www.lincolnsladder.com/) explains Mr. Fraker's passion for Abraham Lincoln's time traveling the Eighth Judicial Circuit in Illinois: For 23 years Abraham Lincoln rode Central Illinois' Eighth Judicial Circuit, building not only his law practice, but also his political base through his relationships with the circuit lawyers and their judge, David Davis. team of lawyers, led by Davis, gained the Republican nomination for Lincoln at the Convention in Chicago in May of 1860. The split of the Democratic Party made the nomination tantamount to election. The circuit, with its leaders and its lawyers, was truly Lincoln's, "ladder to the presidency." Guy C. Fraker has written two books on the Lincoln Circuit. The first was published in 2012, "Lincoln's Ladder to the Presidency: The Eighth Judicial Circuit". This was the first book ever specifically devoted to Lincoln and the Eighth Judicial Circuit. The second book is the companion book also dealing with Lincoln on the Circuit. "Looking for Lincoln in Illinois: a Guide to Lincoln's Eighth Judicial Circuit" was published in October of 2017. The book encourages the readers to visit the roads and towns of Lincoln's Circuit. It contains maps and directions to guide the reader around the Circuit as well as over 90 pictures. Local author, Tim Pletkovich has cancelled his presentation tonight on his book, Nuns, Nazis, and Notre Dame. He will be attending a funeral out of state so we hope you will be understanding of the cancellation. We hope to reschedule the event with him for another time.
We have notified those who registered. We are posting this in case someone was planning on attending who did not register. |
