We are closed until noon due to the recent winter weather. More information to come later.
We are closed today due to weather conditions - Wind Chill Advisory and Winter Storm Warning. Hopefully, we will see you tomorrow! Stay warm and safe today!
This year the El Paso District Library is not doing "Food for Fees" but we will be doing a food drive for the El Paso Food Pantry. Give to your community during this month of love and friendship. The food drive will continue through the end of March.
There will be a box in the entryway to leave your donations. You do not have to make an appointment to come into the entryway of the library. We do ask patrons to respect the rule of "one person at a time in the entryway" for social distancing purposes. I will soon post the items that the food pantry needs the most. ![]() Last night while pretending to watch the Super Bowl with my husband, I saw a commercial (for a mortgage company called Guaranteed Rate, I believe) and it said something about 'Why would a blind man climb Mt. Everest?" I perked up at that and saw that the commercial was showing Erik Weihenmayer! I have recommended his book to many people and most come back telling me that they really enjoyed it. If you read it, then you will find out what a fascinating journey Erik has had and perhaps you can answer the question, "Why would a blind man climb Mt. Everest?" Our winter reading program ends on February 20th. There is still almost 2 weeks to claim a prize or maybe even finish the program.
This program encourages your family to complete a goal of sharing 1,000 books with your child before he or she reaches Kindergarten. Each book you share is helping to build an early learning foundation that can help your child develop language, increase attention spans, expand vocabulary, and improve listening skills. Most importantly, when you take the time to enjoy books together, you are introducing a love of reading that can stay with your child for life!
Anyone with an El Paso Library card can register their child from the day he or she is born to the day he or she enters Kindergarten. Register at the Children’s Library Desk and receive your 1,000 books bag and reading log. Each time you read a book with your child, record it on your reading log. Every 100 books, return your reading log to the Children’s Library Desk to claim your reading reward. The rewards are stickers for some goals and books to take home and keep for others. If you read one book per day, it will take 3 years to complete the goal. If you read 3 books per day, it will take one year. Read whatever amount works for your family. The program runs all year at the library, the only requirement is that all rewards be redeemed before the child’s first day of Kindergarten. Even if you and your child don’t make the 1000 book goal, wouldn’t it be fun to try? The days when you get to read to your child are so precious and the time goes fast. The ‘reading to your child’ stage may become one of your favorite lifetime memories. You can download the forms at our website - under Ongoing Programs, Children's Ongoing Other Programs. If you have a book that you think others would like, we have a "Book Recommendation" file. You can fill out a card that tells the title and author and 3 short reasons why you liked the book. It can be helpful to look through the file and see what others have enjoyed. This file is on the front counter. I know during COVID times not everyone wants to come into the library, but keep it in mind for when you are able to come in.
The Radium Girls by Kate Moore is a young adult nonfiction book about the young women that worked in factories painting the face of clocks that would glow in the dark. The book has an Illinois tie in that one of the factories producing clocks with radium dials was in Ottowa, Illinois. It is a very moving and even inspirational book about the young women who suffered from radium poisoning and their brave fight to expose the truth. So far two librarians have read it and given it a thumbs up! ![]() It can be fun to go back and watch movies with a favorite actress or actor. We have a few movies that Cicely Tyson co-starred in here at the library. You can always find more from other libraries by using RSACAT. Just type in Cicely Tyson in the search area and make sure you are searching ALL libraries. Lots of movies will come up, including 'Because of Winn Dixie' which was one of my personal favorites.
